Form explorations
2008,9 / Form study
One of the biggest parts of ID is form. Concepts can't be realized without taking some sort of form. These are some projects and exercises I've done in the exploration of different types of form utilizing different production methods (both by hand and through digital technology)
Some more specific form studies based on ergonomics can be found here.

Rotoform
"Using a rotationally formed block of wood and 2 vaccuuformed styrene plastic sheets glued together, create a plant vessel for the Golden Pothos which reflects its characteristics and its environment."The Golden Pothos is a very durable and common household plant, so I really focused on refining the curves of the vessel on the lathe, and used secondary shaping and layering of carefully shaped vaccuuformed styrene to create the surface detail. Every component of the vessel, from the profile views, to the flange, to the opening reflects the plant and makes it look at home.
Geoform
"Create a four-board stool from a 10x60in plank of poplar which can support a 200lb. man comfortably. Use geometric, perpendicular, and intersecting planes to create a composition which is also structurally sound."Through additive and subtractive geometry, I composed a stool which, through graphically-composed exposed screws and strategic cuts in the wood, led the user into the seating area.

Digitech tools
I took a whole course learning how to use digital technology for rapid prototyping (lasercutting, 3d printing, CNC milling). Here are several projects from that course. Although some functional products resulted, the main objective in these projects was to explore the technology, as well as improve at 3d modeling.Monitor stand
Using one sheet of acrylic, I designed a structurally sound desktop stand for my laptop, as well as other things I keep on my desk. The layered structure provides support as well as ventilation.
Beautiful form
I modeled a spaceship. For fun. In Alias. Plaster is super fragile, and my friend dropped his backpack on it.
Charcoal file
Taking inspiration from crazy architecture (Frank Gehry), I designed a hand tool for filing charcoal pencils while figure drawing. Printed in ABS. I also vaccuuformed packaging for it.
